Mechanics work, bringing the game to life with content
I am at the point where the mechanics are solid and game play is enjoyable. But the world feels a little sterile. How can I add some flavor? I already have a concept of non-puzzle based content -- the shop and the level exit challenge. I'd like to add extra rooms containing NPCs, lore, and extra depth to the main mechanic. I've also been thinking about the world -- why is the dungeon a crossword? Who made it? How did the player get stuck here? Who else is down here?
I've been keeping a list of extra room ideas. For example:
- A fellow adventurer who appears in each level and comments about your progress. This provides some continuity and sense of a larger world. I think of the optimistic Sherma from Silksong for inspiration.
- Other trapped adventurers who you can free.
- Hidden treasure rooms that you can learn about from other treasure hunters.
- Other traders and sorcerers you can interact with to improve your stats
- Secret rooms with bits of lore
I also have some ideas for special monsters with unique mechanics, like:
- Slime blob who splits and takes over surrounding rooms when attacked.
- Sentinel who takes multiple hits before "waking" with a devastating attack
- A thief who doesn't fight back, but steals your gold and runs away
This variety gives me a lever to introduce enjoyable moments during game play outside of the regular mechanics, and gives more to explore and interact with. It also gives the dungeon a more interesting visual look.
