Project status as end of jam approaches
Submissions for Game Off jam are due tomorrow and my game is not even half finished. I'm not too surprised, considering I'm working on it alone and only for a few hours on weekends. I did run into more technical issues and tricky bugs, especially around FOV, than I expected after spending time getting used to rotjs before hand. But I'm glad that I got enough content in to experience the world expanding and try out a handful of items and terrains with different mechanics.
Here's what I'm gong to do: I'm going to submit the game as is at the first main plot point reveal the player uncovers. And I'll continue to work on it post jam as part of Super Metroidvania Month which is another longer and thematically appropriate jam to finish it off as originally envisioned.
While this is a very simple and minimal game, these are the reasons I'm excited to push it to completion:
- I like the restriction of fitting the whole game and whole story on a single screen
- I think the metroivania mechanics contrasted with the classic roguelike graphics and interface is a unique dichotomy
- I like how the screen progressively fills up to the full map
- I like how the ability upgrades unlock navigating the story as much as the map
